How to Accessorize With Red Shoes

Red shoes are iconic, fun and very in fashion right now, and knowing what to wear with them will add variety and versatility to your wardrobe. Here are some ideas for how to integrate red shoes into your wardrobe.

Forget the old, stale fashion rule: "the shoes must match the purse." Instead, choose a solid-colored bag that complements the intensity of the red color of the shoes. Don't pair a lime-green bag with rust shoes; forest green is a better choice, though a lime-green purse would be excellent with lipstick-red heels.

Don't overwhelm your outfit with red. You can add red elements to your ensemble, just not directly next to the shoes. Red dresses, tights, skirts or pants can be overkill, but a simple, short red jacket, scarf, headband, purse or ruby or coral jewelry can tie the shoes into the rest of the outfit without being too much.

Stick to a few colorsno more than two additional colors plus red. One of the other colors should be black or white. Solids work best, but if you want to wear prints, choose simple designs in black and white such as polka dots or stripes. If you want to add a more daring print such as leopard or zebra, keep these to a minimum, as with a belt, headband or small clutch purse. Dark denim also complements red shoes, such as with a pair of dark skinny jeans and a simple white top for a more casual look.

Be creative. Within these guidelines, choose what you like best. You can go simple with a pair of red ballet flats and a white dress, red heels with a little black dress and red jewelry for evening, or even a pair of red pumps with a conservative gray suit for the office. Just remember to let the shoes be the focus of the outfit and let the other elements work to show them off.

How to Sew Ribbons & Elastic onto Pointe Shoes

Ribbons and elastic are the final touch to any ballerina's pair of pointe shoes. When you purchase new pointe shoes --- after you slightly break them in and dry them out --- sew ribbons and elastic onto the shoes. The elastic offers support; the ribbons help to keep the ankle taut, and they also look delicate and beautiful. Once you have sewn the ribbons and elastic onto your pointe shoes, you'll be ready to dance.

Instructions

Fold the back of the shoe inward toward the sole to determine where to place the ribbon. The ribbon will sit on the inside of the creases that are formed when you create this fold. Make a mark with a pencil on each side of the interior of the pointe shoe. This helps you remember where to put the ribbon.

Cut four 12-inch pieces of ribbon. You will use two pieces of ribbon per pointe shoe. Holding one of the four pieces, fold the tip of the ribbon over approximately 1 inch to create a sort of hem so that the edges will not fray. You do not need to sew this hem; just press the folded ribbon directly into the shoe before you begin to sew.

Place one piece of ribbon on the interior of the pointe shoe, where you have made the pencil marks. The folded "hem" should be the end of the ribbon that is placed in the shoe.

Sew along the top of the casing of the pointe shoe by hand. Use small, tight stitches so that the ribbon does not pull away from the shoe. Knot it off and cut the excess thread with the scissors.

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 on the other side of the interior of the pointe shoe.

Repeat the process with the other pointe shoe.

Cut two pieces of elastic that are at least 4 inches in length.

Line up one edge of one piece of the elastic with the heel seam of one pointe shoe. When looking at the point shoe from the back, the elastic should be directly to the side of the heel seam.

Repeat Step 2 on the other side of the heel seam, using the other edge of the piece of elastic. Make marks with your pencil to help remember where the elastic should go.

Use a similar tight, small stitch to sew one side of the elastic as you did with the ribbons. It may help to turn the shoe inside out. Knot it off and cut the excess thread with the scissors.

Turn the shoe right side out. Try on the pointe shoe and pull the elastic over to see how tight you need it to be across the bridge of your foot. Make a mark on the elastic for where you want it to be sewn onto the shoe. Repeat the sewing process on this side of the interior of the pointe shoe, and then repeat the entire process for the second pointe shoe.

It's frankly impossible for manufacturers to produce satin shoes in every single color of the rainbow - it isn't realistic or cost effective. But if you would like your footwear to be a specific hue - to match a costume or outfit, for stage or ballroom dancing, for a bridesmaid dress, or simply because you desire a certain color shoe - then you can purchase a pair of white satin shoes and dye them to any shade you like.

Instructions

Boil 2 to 4 cups of water in your old pot. Put on your household gloves.

Release 1 or 2 drops of dye into the water. Stir this dye solution well with your old spoon.

Dip your sponge in the dye solution and apply it to your test square of satin. Assess the color. If it's too light, add more dye to the pot. If it's too dark, slowly add more water to the potuntil you reach the desired shade.

Dip the sponge in the dye solution and apply it to the shoe. Start with the back seam, and make smooth, even strokes in one direction towards the toe until the shoe is covered.

Repeat Step 4 once or twice more for a more vivid color.

Let the shoes dry out for 24 hours before wearing.

How to Soften the Outside of Ugg Boots

UGG boots offer a high level of warmth and comfort in cold temperatures. One of the reasons UGG boots can offer this comfort is because they are made of Grade A sheepskin to ensure a soft, comfortable fit for every pair of boots. However, because UGG boots are made of sheepskin, your boots will require special care to clean and soften the outside of UGG boots. To keep UGGs soft, properly pre-treat them to resist damage, and then condition regularly to keep them soft.

Instructions

Set the boots up in a place that is away from furniture or carpeting. Spray the entire boot with UGG Australia Water & Stain Repellent until the boots look like they are slightly wet. Allow them to air dry for 24 hours away from sunlight or direct heat. Use a suede brush to brush the suede, pushing it all in the same direction.

Wet a clean rag under cold water, and dampen the entire boot. Mix UGG Australia Sheepskin Cleaner and Conditioner with water in equal amounts. Therefore, if you mix 1/4 cup of cleaner, you will also need to use 1/4 cup of water.

Dip a wet sponge into a small amount of diluted cleaner, and apply it to the boot. Gently scrub the boot, being careful not to damage the sheepskin. Rinse the boot under cold water to remove all of the cleaner.

Dry off the excess water. Ball up scrap paper, and stuff it inside the shaft of the boot to help it hold its shape. Allow the UGG boots to dry completely, again away from sunlight or direct heat. When the boots have completely dried, brush the sheepskin again with the suede brush.

UGG boots have been around for quite some time, but didn't take off as a fashion statement until recently. How much of a fashion statement they are is debatable, but one thing is for sure--you have to know how to wear them and wear them in a way that looks best on your body type, not on your favorite celebrity.

Get shopping. Pick a pair of UGGs in the color and style that best fits your lifestyle. They come in a slew of styles, from plain and lace-up to knee-highs, clogs and slippers. Depending on what you plan on wearing them for, you can have a whole collection of UGGs.

Wearing them with skinny jeans (if you are a female) seems to be the latest craze, but UGGs can be worn with any type of jean. However, contrary to popular opinion, the traditional UGG is not accepted as appropriate office wear, for nice restaurants or as a replacement for couture footwear. UGG footwear were created for comfort as a work shoe and to wear around the house on colder days to keep the feet toasty. It was not created to wear with business suits or nice dresses and looks inappropriate when paired with formal attire.

Although women wear UGG boots with shorts and skirts, it really isn't a flattering look, particularly if your legs are heavier. The clunky style of the boot makes your legs look heavier than they are.

You shouldn't wear UGGs in wet or muddy conditions. While they are warm, they do not have water-repellent qualities and will instead absorb and hold the moisture. A similar problem is caused when wearing UGGs in warm conditions. Sweat from feet will absorb into the lining of the boot and cause an unpleasant odor.

Choose the color of UGGs with care. Remember that lighter fabrics tend to look dirty more quickly. Because they are worn outside of pants, you can't hide a dirty UGG.
