How to Treat Suede Boots if They Are Already Waterproof

How to Treat Suede Boots if They Are Already Waterproof

In addition to keeping your feet and legs warm and dry during the winter months, boots are often stylish fashion accessories, especially when your boots are made of suede. However, suede boots, stylish though they may be, are difficult to care for. Even if your boots are already waterproof they still present you with a challenge when it comes to caring for them and keeping them clean. There are a few things you can do to treat and care for your suede boots and extend the life of the soft, supple material.

Instructions

    1

Refrain from wearing suede boots in the rain or snow. Waterproof suede is protected from wet weather to an extent, but the suede could still incur damage in wet weather.

    2

Spray a light coat of silicon spray onto your boots before wearing them, just in case you unexpectedly encounter wet weather. Silicon spray is found in any shoe store and many department stores.

    3

Dry the silicon spray. Do not use direct heat, such as a dryer or hair dryer; let the boots sit until they are dry and restore the softness of the suede by rubbing the shoes with a very fine sandpaper or emery board.

    4

Brush your shoes off with a soft sponge or towel after each wear to remove loose dirt and grime from the suede.

About Shoes With Wheels

About Shoes With Wheels

People need not run ragged through town when they can simply put on a pair of shoes with wheels. A popular item for kids, and even some adults, shoes with wheels can help folks whiz down the street or help them master some of the same fancy tricks used while roller skating. Shoes with wheels come in several different varieties, often offer replacement parts and have been popular enough to be banned or discouraged in certain public places.

Identification

Shoes with wheels will have some standard features with which they can be identified. All will have a fairly thick sole with enough room to hold at least a small pair of wheels. They will have a hollow recess where wheels can be stored when not in use. The top of the shoe may not be easily discerned to be a shoe with wheels, but a glance at the shoe's sole will give it away every time.

Function

The main purposes of shoes with wheels are to get around quickly and have some fun. The shoes can be worn as a regular walking pair that instantly transform into a roller skate. Since folks can roll around quicker than they can walk around, extracting the wheels from the shoes can get a person down the block in a fraction of the time as walking, or even running, would take. Wheels will also allow wearers to try different tricks, spins, stunts and other skating moves at will.

Types

Several varieties of shoes with wheels are on the market. The most popular is a sneaker-type shoe that has wheels in the heel. Sneaker styles range from the standard tennis shoe to sportier versions of walking shoes. Some may have more than one set of wheels in the heel area and others will have wheels in the heel and in the front of the shoe, near the ball of the foot. Other styles include a shoe that resembles a mini-boot or even platform sandals with wheels. Those with wheels in the back area only require a tad more practice to master. The wearer must learn to lean back and balance all his weight on the heel area.
The most popular brand of shoes with wheels is Heelys. This Dallas-based company started with limited distribution at the end of 2000 and was shipping shoes with wheels internationally mere months later. Other brands include Pro-Nova and LaKidz. Shoes with wheels can be found at some sporting goods stores, specialty and toy stores or online (see Resources).

Warning

Shoes with wheels have to be worn with the utmost care. Since the sole of the shoe includes a hollow chamber for the wheels, stomping around or walking or ragged terrain may damage the bottom. Wearers also need to heed where they are wheeling. Uneven surfaces, ice, broken sidewalks, stairways and other hazardous ground can be dangerous if you attempt to wheel on over it. Wheel shoes may be banned or simply uncouth to wear in certain places, such as courthouses, churches, parking lots or down the hallways at work.

Considerations

For those that may not want to invest in a pair of shoes with wheels, another option is available. A device called Wheel Blazers can transform most ordinary shoes into a makeshift roller skate. Wheel blazers are a set of two wheels attached to a cradle that fits on the back of each shoe. The wheels light up when they spin around, making for some exciting visuals if you are wheeling with them in dim light.

Care of Coach Boots

Whether they're brand new or you've had them for a while, your Coach boots must be cared for in order to maintain their high-quality look. Created in 1891, Coach is most famous for their handbags, although they make a variety of leather products, including shoes and boots. The quality of their products makes Coach an expensive brand, so you want these boots to last. Keep your Coach boots looking good by cleaning them with easy-to-find shoe cleaning products.

Instructions

Leather

    1

Wipe Coach shoes clean using a dry cloth for leather, calfskin, natural grain and spazzalato shoes.

    2

Apply a dime-sized amount of shoe polish or shoe cream onto the cloth.

    3

Rub polish onto the boots in gentle, circular motions. Allow the polish to air dry completely before wearing the boots.

Suede and Nubuck

    4

Brush suede and nubuck shoes with a soft suede brush to remove any stains.

    5

Use a suede eraser on stains that are tough to remove, then brush over the area with the suede brush.

    6

Rub sandpaper over the shoe to roughen up the suede. This reinvigorates suede that has lost its natural roughness over time, returning it to its original look.

How to Buy Eco Friendly Shoes

How to Buy Eco Friendly Shoes

Reducing your carbon footprint can start at the source: your feet. Buying eco friendly shoes is another way of helping the environment while improving the quality of life for both consumers and workers. By incorporating animal rights, sustainability and fair labor practices into their design, eco friendly shoes will help you take your first steps to greening your fashion.

Instructions

    1

Do online research. Several major retailers such as Patagonia, Terra Plana, and Veja produce environmentally friendly shoes for a variety of lifestyles. Even though a small portion of the industry is considered eco-conscious, the supplies are in high demand and a growing number of stores carry at least some types of "green" footwear in their stores. Research companies and their products online to find your best options.

    2

If going organic, look for the label. Keep an eye out for the USDA label before purchasing your shoes since all valid certifying agencies must comply with USDA standards in order to be officially labeled organic. The label ensures that your product is make from materials grown and produced without chemicals and unnatural ingredients, and the health of the ecosystems where they were farmed were also taken into account. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the various levels of organic (not everything is 100%) so that you buy a product that's up to your standards.

    3

Go even greener with vegan. Taking eco friendly shoes to the next level is t casan, Natalie Portman's organic shoe line. Since animals use up much more energy and resources than plants, choosing footwear made completely of vegan materials is a great way to help the environment. Best yet, t casan is a much more stylish and chic option for women than traditional eco shoes, so its popularity and availability are undeniable.

    4

Embrace fair trade. Most of the world's farmers are treated unethically, but fair trade means just that: fair wages, fair working conditions, and fair treatment of the environment. You are guaranteed workers received the minimum payment plus an additional premium for certified organic products, and they are also eligible for pre-harvest credit. Fair trade also allows farmers to enjoy freedom of association and safe working conditions with no forced child labor permitted. And even better? The farming practices omit toxic chemicals and GMOs in favor of environmentally sustainable methods.

    5

Check out outdoor sporting goods stores. Retailers such as REI, LL Bean and Eastern Mountain Sports are dedicated to exploring the great outdoors, and as a result are usually intent on incorporating eco-friendly products and practices in their business models. Cut your shopping time in half by heading straight to one of these stores for durable and rugged organic shoe options for all seasons.

How to Get Rid of Oil Stain on Uggs Polo Boots

How to Get Rid of Oil Stain on Uggs Polo Boots

Ugg Polo Boots add warmth and style to your wardrobe. The lambswool-lined suede boots have the added fashion flare of an Ed Hardy design on the sides. Protect your fashionable footwear investment by using care when removing an oil stain from your Uggs. Similar to other suede surfaces, Ugg boots must be cleaned with the driest cleaning methods possible to avoid damaging the suede. Simple home remedies remove oil stains on your Ugg boots, allowing you to keep them in tip-top condition.

Instructions

    1

Sprinkle talcum powder over the oil stain on your Ugg boots. Use enough powder to form a mound over the boots to absorb the oil. Leave the powder on the boots for 20 minutes, then brush it off. If the oil stain is large and a lot of oil remains in the suede, you can repeat this step two or three more times to absorb more of the oil.

    2

Brush the suede with a clean toothbrush after the final application of talcum powder to remove the powder completely.

    3

Dampen a clean cloth with white vinegar. Brush the stained area of your Ugg boots with the vinegar to lift the rest of the oil and remove any accompanying odor. Press a dry cloth into the suede to absorb excess moisture. Allow your Ugg boots to dry completely.

    4

Brush the suede with the toothbrush to blend the nap and fluff up the suede fibers.

How to Loosen Your Shoe Laces

How to Loosen Your Shoe Laces

When shoes begin to hurt your feet, consider loosening the laces to give slack to the shoe. Many times the problem is solved quickly, and without pulling your foot out, by simply loosening the bow or knot. If the problem persists, which can be uncomfortable, then remove your foot and pull all the laces loose. You want to avoid walking or running in shoes that are too tight because it can damage foot nerves, according to Dr. Thomas Hecker, doctor of podiatric medicine. Take the proper steps to loosen the laces if the situation arises.

Instructions

    1

Untie the shoe lace bow or knot. Once the shoe lace bow or knot is removed, wiggle your foot out of the shoe. Let your laces hang to either side of the shoe.

    2

Use your index fingers to wrap around the top laces that run between the top two holes, and pull upward. This will shorten the tying laces.

    3

Insert your thumbs into the shoe and pull the sides outward. The area full of laces will open slightly.

    4

Move down the laces to the laces that string between the next two holes. Pull the laces upward with your index fingers, just like the first set of laces. Open the shoe again.

    5

Repeat the process of pulling the laces upward, and opening the shoe, until the all the laces are loose.

    6

Insert your foot back into the shoe, and tighten according to your preference.

What Does a Shoe Designer Do?

What Does a Shoe Designer Do?

Most women lust over the latest Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choos. They drool over Christian Louboutin's latest red-soled creations and sometimes steal away to the shoe department at Saks to try on a coveted pair. Some women are lucky enough to purchase such a luxury, and a chosen few have closets full of them. Blahnik, Choo and Louboutin are some of the superstars of shoe designing, so famous that they even take time out of their busy schedules to autograph their creations for eager fans. But what did they do to become such masters of their trade? And what does it takes to be a shoe designer?

The Beginning

As with many shoe designers, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin started out in the world of fashion. Both attended art school and started by designing both clothing and shoes. Shoe designers can also start out as cobblers and make their own piece of art, just as fledgling clothing designers sew their own designs at the beginning of their career. Although essentially anyone can be a shoe designer without formal art school education, knowing the basics will help a new career unfold.

Exploring the World

It is important for a shoe designer to stay abreast of current trends. While many designers (like Manolo Blahnik, for example) ignore trends completely and design only classic shoes, it is still important to know what is going on in the world of fashion. A classic line may sell well, but most shoe designers also produce a seasonal line of trendy wear. The designer must attend fashion shows the world over to stay in the know, typically setting foot on the catwalks of Paris, New York, Tokyo, London, Milan and Florence at least once a year.

Drafting and Drawing

A large part of a shoe designer's day involves drafting and drawing the shoes they want to see come to life. While many famous costume and clothing designers cannot draw, it is important that a shoe designer can communicate with his or her staff so the shoe will look like the design envisioned. An alternative to drafting with pencil and paper is the computer. There are many programs where the designer can input specific materials to make a virtual shoe that is ready for a team of cobblers to make.

Working Life

Some shoe designers work for others while some work for themselves. Having the title "Shoe Designer" doesn't necessarily mean the designer has complete freedom. Many work under more "senior" designers who tell them what to design to pass on to the team below them. It takes several designers to create shoes, but some of the biggest names, like Christian Louboutin, claim to personally decorate each shoe himself. Not everyone will end up like him, unfortunately. A typical designer starts out banking around $45,000 per year and the salary rises as one gains experience in the industry. There is no cap on how much one can make. It is possible to earn into the millions if a line sells well.

Business

As with many creative industries, being a successful shoe designer is only partly due to talent. To become self-sufficient, it is important to market designs in order to climb the ranks. It also helps to network and meet with investors who believe in the designer's work, so someday the designer can open her own boutique. Once that goal of a freestanding boutique is reached, having a good advertising team is essential for sales.

Higher (Heel) Education

Although a background in fashion is not necessary to become a shoe designer, it is certainly helpful. The following schools have programs in shoe design: Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM, Los Angeles), Fashion Institute of Technology (New York City), Ars Sutoria (Milan, Italy), Cordwainers (London, UK), DeMontfort University (Leicester, UK), Polimoda (Florence, Italy) and London College of Fashion (London, UK). Happy studying.
