Ugg boots gained popularity in the United States in the 2000s, but have been worn for decades in different parts of the world. The boots are believed to have originated in Australia and New Zealand, where they have been so pervasive that "Ugg" has ceased to be a brand name and is now (officially) a style of shoe like an oxford or Mary Jane is here. The brand name is still very popular in the United States, however. Because each pair of shoes sells for approximately $100, many fakes have been put on the market and sold as the real thing, especially through online retailers like eBay. Spotting a fake Ugg boot is simple with the right know-how.

Look at the bottom of the boot. If there is no "UGG" design recessed into the sole of the shoe, it is fake. The letters "U G G" should be raised against the center of the sole area. A sunburst design should be in the center, between the U G G letters.
2Read where the seller says the boot came from. Uggs are no longer made in Australia and New Zealand, but some retailers try to pass off their fake Uggs as real by saying they were made there. The official Ugg boots are now made in China.
3Take your boots to an official Ugg retailer. (They are sold at boutiques and fine department stores.) Compare a pair from the store to the Uggs whose authenticity you question. Fake Uggs do not run a size larger; and are smaller, have a wider ankle and are taller than real Uggs. Also, the front section of the fake Ugg is shorter than real Uggs.
4Smell the shoes. Fake Uggs have dyed wool instead of genuine sheepskin as their lining. The dye has a smell to it. Real uggs will not smell.
5Check the sole thickness. Fake Uggs have a thin sole that is about 1/4 of an inch thick. Real Uggs have about a one-inch-thick sole.
