How to Tell Classic Tall Uggs are Fake

Brian Smith introduced America to sheepskin boots in 1978, which marked the beginning of the brand Ugg. Ugg markets their boots to "...consumers who value luxury, comfort and the highest quality footwear available." Because their boots truly do feature high quality sheepskin and other materials, manufacturers of lower grade boots often mimic their designs, attempting to pass off imitation Ugg boots as the real thing. However, there are certain distinguishing characteristics that you can look out for that will help you spot the fake one, especially when it comes to classic, tall Ugg boots.

Instructions

Turn the boots over and look at the sole. You should see an official Ugg logo. Feel the Ugg logo with your fingers: it should be raised and textured.

Bend the sole of the shoe towards you and then away from you. The sole should be totally flexible and not feel even slightly stiff.

Lift the boots to your nose. Fake Uggs will often not smell of sheepskin but of dye. If you inhale a strong chemical scent, they're probably fake.

Turn the boots slowly around in your hands and examine the stitching. With real Uggs, the stitching will be flawless and absolutely perfect. With fake Uggs, you'll see loose threads, crooked or uneven stitches.

Grip the sole's width between your thumb and forefinger. Examine how wide it is. Fake Uggs will usually be around 1/4 inch and real Uggs will be closer to 1/2 inch wide.

Grip the Uggs by the top part of the upper portion of the boot. Try to roll the boots down. With real Uggs, rolling them down should feel easy and nearly effortless. With fake Uggs, it will feel like you are fighting against the material.

Shoes can be expensive, especially the more stylish ones. But why be limited to the shoes that stores carry? You can make your own stylish one-of-a-kind shoes by painting them. Using just paint and a paint brush, you could even start a trend.

Decide on the design you would like to paint on your shoes. You can go with abstract designs, checkers or even famous works of art. For inspiration, check out Web sites like The History of Art, which has examples of art from prehistory to the present (see References 1). You could even do a trompe l'oeil (fool the eye) design. These appear to be three-dimensional or mistaken for the thing itself.

Draw your design on paper so you can get an idea of how it would look before you paint it. This is especially important when your design is three dimensional (see Step 1).

Pencil your design on the shoes. Once you have the design mapped out, you can make any adjustments you need to make to get the the design to look proportional.

Paint the design on your shoes using acrylic paint. You may have to use smaller brushes for the more intricate designs. Fortunately, acrylic paint dries very quickly, which means you will not have to wait long between adding different colors.

How to Clean Oil From Ugg Boots

Ugg boots are quickly rising in popularity, and the more they're worn, the more chances they have to get dirty. Oil stains from parking lots and driveways can mar the look and remove the nap from the boots. Luckily, it's very easy to clean oil from Ugg boots. All you need is a sponge, leather cleaner, water, and a little elbow grease to make your boots look brand new.

Instructions

Use a damp sponge to moisten the stained outer portion of the boot. Never get the inside of boots wet. Mix one part leather cleaner with one part water.

Apply the cleaning solution to a clean sponge and gently rub the pre-moistened area. Rinse the sponge in clean, cold water and use it to rinse the cleaner off of the boot.

Stuff the inside of the boots with as much newspaper as possible. Place them outside in a sunny location. Allow them to dry for two to four hours. The newspaper will prevent the boots from shrinking in the heat.

Brush the outer portions of the boots with a suede brush. This will help bring the nap back to the fabric, creating a like new look.

Mix two teaspoons of baking soda with two teaspoons of corn flower. Dump the mixture into the boots and shake well to cover the inside. This will remove any odor caused by the leather cleaner.

Allow the boots to sit overnight, and then shake the excess powder out. Optionally, you can apply one to two drops of lavender essential oil into the boots to provide an attractive, clean smell to the boots.

Leather Shoes

Buff your shoes with a clean damp cloth. Scrub off any accumulated dirt or grime.

Wipe the shoes dry with a soft, dry cloth. Buff to a shine.

Apply a quarter-sized amount of leather cream to a cloth. Massage it into the leather until it is fully absorbed.

Apply shoe polish when needed.

Non-Leather Shoes

Wet a soft cloth completely and add a few drops of soap or detergent.

Apply the soapy cloth directly to spots or stains on denim, canvas, felt or linen shoes. Concentrate on heavily soiled areas.
