What to Wear With Wedge Shoes

What to Wear With Wedge Shoes

Wedge shoes are a hot and trendy fashion choice for woman who want the height and style that stilettos offer but with a funky edge. Wedges, in comparison to stilettos, are much easier to walk in, as the heel of the shoe runs from the heel to the middle or front of the foot instead of being solely under your natural heel.

Dress Up or Dress Down

Wedge shoes can be dressed up or dressed down, but they are too casual for a formal or black tie event. Take an outfit from one level to another by carefully choosing what pieces to add to the ensemble. For example, the wedge can be casual when paired with jeans or capris and a tank top but dressy if added to a flowing skirt with some trendy costume jewelry.

The shoes will add a bulkiness to the foot and ankle, so exercise caution when choosing pieces. Pairing them with a tight legged jean or pant or a narrow skirt such as a pencil skirt will likely not be flattering.

Pieces That Work

The style of garments that do complement the wedge shoe are loose fitting and flowing fabrics. A flowing skirt or an A-line dress that floats away from the leg will work well with the wedge heel. Wide-leg pants, boot cut or flared jeans and capris also work well with the wedge heel, as do gaucho style pants. A Bohemian or gypsy-style dress, which are typically long and crafted of flowing material, are contrasted nicely by the bulky and solid wedge heel, which translates to an attractive and trendy outfit.

Wedge heels can often be found with a design on the side of the wedge. This eye-catching detail can be incorporated into the entire ensemble for an added touch of style. The design or colors on the side of the wedge could also be the link necessary to tie an outfit together.

How to Care for Waterproof Suede Boots

How to Care for Waterproof Suede Boots

Suede boots look chic and are comfortable to wear. Unfortunately suede boots are difficult to care for and are a challenge to clean and maintain. Avoid wearing suede boots in the rain or snow because suede should not become wet. When suede does become wet, it loses its texture and may create stains that are hard to remove. Preventive maintenance and proper cleaning helps keep suede boots looking attractive for many seasons to come.

Instructions

    1

Spray a light application of silicone onto your suede boots after you first purchase them. Allow the boots to dry away from direct heat, which may stiffen the suede and cause it to crack. The silicone creates a barrier so dirt and moisture do not penetrate into the suede.

    2

Spray a stain repellent onto your suede boots before you wear them. Look for a stain repellent used for suede.

    3

Remove dirt from suede boots by brushing loose dirt with a dry sponge or suede brush. Brush dirt away quickly so dirt or grime buildup does not occur on the suede.

    4

Remove grease stains with a dry cleaning solvent mixed with sawdust or other absorbent. Rub the stain gently with the mixture, using caution because dry cleaning solvents can remove color. Use the dry cleaning mixture on a less noticeable spot on the boot first to make sure the solvent will not remove the color.

    5

Brush the nap with a clean toothbrush or terry cloth to raise the suede if it appears flattened.

    6

Clean suede boots through a professional if they become embedded with dirt or stains. A professional has the necessary tools and cleaners to care for your suede appropriately.

How to Buy Authentic Designer Shoes on eBay

How to Buy Authentic Designer Shoes on eBay

Shopping on eBay has become one of the fastest growing markets to buying and selling goods. While it can be a very rewarding adventure, it can also be a disappointing hassle if you do not receive the products you were promised. With an auction site the size of eBay, with sellers and buyers in the millions, it is hard to know who you can trust. Unfortunately, not everything you see on eBay is what it claims to be. Selling knockoffs, especially big brand and designer shoes, is a big business in today's economy and whether youre looking for a past-season style of your favorite Jimmy Choos or a vintage special edition of those Converse hi-tops you covet, eBay can be both a blessing and a curse. Be smart and shop with patience and youll be sure to find exactly what youre looking for and heres a helpful guide.

Instructions

    1

Learn your size. If youve never owned a pair of shoes from the designer you are purchasing, then you need to find out your shoe size. Shoes are manufactured in different countries, according to a variety of specifications, which means one size does not fit all. Visit a department store that carries designer shoes and try a few on to get your size. Remember to consider European and other foreign size conversions. For example, a size 8 US can be a 38 in Europe.

    2

Check the patent. You can check the patent and manufacturing of every shoe ever created by looking at either the tag on the underside of the tongue, the seal on the inside of either heel, or often times it can be found on the bottom exterior of the sole. This mark will range in information, depending on the brand, but can tell you as little as the size and name to the manufacturing date and origin. Familiarize yourself with the brand so you know what to look for. Designer shoes most often come out of Italy and will have genuine leather tags, while manufactured brands can come from places like China and Portugal.

    3

Check the fine print on a seller's return policy. When buying on eBay, make sure the company you are buying from has a guarantee and a return option. Never buy from companies that dont have a return policy in place. Read the fine print to be sure the shipping and handling isnt padded in one direction. For warranty information, go directly to the brand or designers website from which the shoe originally came from for warranty information.

    4

Check the shoes' authenticity. Most designer shoes come with boxes, tags, authenticity cards and serial numbers. Replicas and knockoffs can have counterfeit cards and numbers, but you can check the authenticity at any designer store or online with customer service.

    5

Check the box. Some eBay sellers may not even know that the shoes they are selling arent authentic. While many shoes are manufactured internationally, if they are authentic, they will be sold directly from a warehouse in the United States. Missoni shoes, for instance, are manufactured in Italy, but wholesalers buy directly from the US warehouse. US Customs certified shoes are shipped from inside the US, so if you receive a shipment from a foreign country, chances are the shoes are knockoffs. Be extra cautious of sellers in Asia.

    6

Check the reviews and opinions on the sellers page. This may be one of the best ways to check customer satisfaction, but dont believe everything you read. Look closely at all the comments to see if there is a trend in neutral comments or if there is unusual positive feedback because these may be signs of fraudulent comment activity and cannot be trusted.

    7

Study the shoe. Once you receive your shoes, inspect them carefully. Designer shoes are made of quality materials, genuine leather and have impeccable stitching. Knockoffs will often have mismatching colors, are irregularly stitched, have glue marks and have an overall feel of bad craftsmanship.

How to Choose Shoes for a Narrow Foot

A narrow foot can look so beautiful and most would think that it would be easy to fit into a shoe. Those of you who have a narrow foot will know the struggles. In most cases you can thank one your parents for your narrow feet as they probably have them too. Narrow feet are hereditary.

Instructions

    1

Have your feet measured to see just how narrow they are. You may have a AA width fitting which will not be available in regular shoe stores.

    2

Seek out the specialist shoe stores in your city that fit narrow feet. Most shoes in a regular shop are a B width fitting. So if you measure up as a AA fitting you are not going to have much luck.

    3

Wear an insert where possible to add some volume to the shoe. You may already have orthotics which help to pad out the shoe. This is particularly helpful if the heel of your foot is very narrow and the front of your foot is an average size.

    4

Go for shoes that have a lace or an adjustable strap. This will allow the shoe to be held onto your foot to prevent slipping.

    5

Add a pad to the tongue of the shoe or the heel to take up more room in the shoe. These can be bought from some shoe stores.

    6

Add an extra islet in your shoe for the lace so that it can be laced up closer to the ankle or add an extra islet to the strap of your shoe. This way you can fasten the shoe firmer or higher and it will be held on to your foot without slipping.

    7

Seek the help of a shoe maker of you are unable to find shoes to fit. They will be able to make you a pair of shoes to fit your narrow feet.

How to Make Recycled Plastic Bag Boots

How to Make Recycled Plastic Bag Boots

Plastic bags, one of the most common forms of household waste, are a pervasive problem in many cities and municipalities, gradually building up in watersheds, landfills and even on city streets as litter. Several environmentally-conscious designers, however, have chosen to attack the problem with ingenious designs to reuse plastic bags and plastic bag materials, turning the slow biodegrading process of plastic bags into an advantage for making durable consumer goods. For instance, Louie Rigano, a designer working in collaboration with the Rhode Island School of Design, proposed a clever method for recycling plastic bags into rain boots.

Instructions

Plastic Bag Lining

    1

Cut off the sealed end and handles from each of your bags with scissors. Discard the removed ends and flatten out the remaining rectangles of plastic. Fold the bags inside out if they have any ink designs on the outside surface.

    2

Make a straight rectangular stack of eight plastic bags and place it over your ironing surface.

    3

Cut out a piece of cheesecloth to the dimensions of your plastic bag stack (approximately one square foot) and place it over the stack of plastic bags. Place eight more plastic bags over the cheesecloth, making a stack of 16 plastic bags with a layer of cheesecloth in the middle. Make sure all the ends of the bags and cheesecloth are aligned into one rectangular stack.

    4

Cover the whole stack with a layer of parchment paper.

    5

Heat your iron and gently go over the stack covered with parchment paper. Run the iron over the stack until the plastic has melted, fused with the cheesecloth and created a solid plastic lining.

    6

Allow the lining to cool and use scissors to remove uneven ends or loose pieces of plastic or cheesecloth.

    7

Repeat the process with 16 more bags and the remaining square foot of cheesecloth, making two pieces of one square foot of lining.

Making Template Forms

    8

Mark template forms on each piece of lining using a shoe or boot as a model to adjust the template to the proper size. Begin by drawing the shape of your sole on the lining.

    9

Draw a half oval on the lining that will serve as the tip of your boot. Use an existing shoe or boot to take the measurement, rolling the tip of the shoe over the lining to measure the amount of lining that would be used by the shoe tip if it were separated from the sole and flattened. Use the measurement from the middle of your shoe to the tip as the height of the oval.

    10

Cut out the boot leg from the remaining piece of lining. The leg will be a rectangle, where the height of the rectangle will determine the height of your boot from the sole to the top and the width will determine how wide the boot leg will be. Cut the two bottom corners of the rectangle on a diagonal to make the process of attaching them to the tip easier.

    11

Repeat the process for the remaining side, using the opposite shoe. If you started with the left shoe, for instance, take measurement for your right shoe on the other piece of lining.

Making Boots

    12

Place the sole for your left boot flat on the ground.

    13

Take the half oval you made for the tip and curve it over the tip of the sole, so that the sides of the oval are all in contact with the rims of the sole.

    14

Hold the two pieces in place and begin to fasten them together by going over the connection with a needle and thread. Go over the connection with loose stitching at first to hold the pieces in place and then repeat the process with tighter stitching in order to create a durable seam.

    15

Hold the rectangular piece of lining against the back of the sole, curving the piece into a cylinder where the two tips cut at a diagonal are on the bottom and allow you to connect the leg to the tip while leaving room for your foot.

    16

Use needle and thread to stitch the rectangle together as a cylinder, connect the bottom to the ends of the tip and the back to the sole. Go over all the stitching to reinforce the connection and, once the stitching is solid, cover all of the connections with a thin layer of plastic sealant to waterproof the boots and stitching. Repeat the process for the remaining side and piece of lining.
