How to Get a Musty Smell Out of Suede Boots

How to Get a Musty Smell Out of Suede Boots

Long-lasting and fashionable, suede boots can give years of protection against the harshest winter weather. Cleaning and storing them to retain their original appearance and smell, however, can be tricky. Storage during the long summer months can result in boots smelling musty when they are used again. While this smell can be removed with professional cleaning, it is an expensive process. Remove unwanted odors from your boots at home by using simple cupboard ingredients and a little patience.

Instructions

    1

Remove any padding or packing material from inside the boot that may have been placed there for storage.

    2

Place 2 tbsp. baking soda onto the insole of each boot and shake it well to ensure that a thin layer of soda is spread across the entire inside surface of the boot.

    3

Leave the boots in a warm place for 24 hours. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and also kills mold, bacteria and fungal spores. Any musty smell will be drawn into the powder.

    4

Vacuum the inside of the boots thoroughly to remove the baking soda.

    5

Check that the musty smell has been removed. If not, repeat the process. Good alternative deodorizers are domestic cat litter or antibacterial foot powder. Sprinkle a thin layer of either of these into the boots, leave for 24 hours and vacuum clean.

    6

Consult a professional suede cleaner for advice if the musty smell remains after two or three treatments.

How to Put on Rubber Boots

How to Put on Rubber Boots

Rubber boots have many names: overshoes, galoshes or rain boots. No matter what you call your rubber boots, the function and purpose remains the same: protecting your feet from water. Putting on rubber boots with ease is determined by purchasing the correct size of boots. The boots must be large enough to fit over the wearers everyday shoes. The best fit is ensured by trying on the boots while wearing your normal shoes. Some rubber boots are meant to be worn alone. Wear these boots as you would normal shoes or boots.

Instructions

Putting Rubber Boots Over Shoes

    1

Sit on a chair or bed and prop your shoed feet in front of you on a stool or table if available. If youre comfortable sitting on the floor and pulling your leg up beside you, this is an easy way to put on your rubber boots too.

    2

Grasp the top opening of the rubber boot with each hand on both sides of the rubber boot. Some rubber boots are made with handles on each side of the boot which aid in pulling the rubber boots onto your feet. These handles are most often found on children's sized rubber boots.

    3

Insert your shoed foot into the boot opening, while tugging the boot over your shoes.

    4

Continue to pull on the rubber boot until the boot is over your shoe/foot. Snap or button any closures on the top edge of the rubber boot if one is present. There may be a loop that you stretch over the shank of a button to close the top of the rubber boot. The closure is for further waterproofing and warmth and also helps keep the boot securely on your foot.

Putting on Wear Alone Rubber Boots

    5

Sit in a comfortable position where you can reach your feet easily. There are some brands of rubber shoes that do not require you to wear regular shoes beneath. These rubber boots sometimes have a fleece or wool lining for warmth. If your rubber boot is a wear-alone rubber boot with no warm lining, wear extra thick socks for warmth and comfort. These boots are sized according to the size shoe/boot that you normally wear.

    6

Grasp each side of the boot with each of your hands and pull the boot over your foot, pulling the boot over your ankle and to the appropriate position of your leg. Rubber boots come in ankle to over-the-knee height. Pick a boot that is comfortable for you and serves your purposes.

    7

Close the boot according to the closure built into the boot: zipper, buttons, or hook and eyes. Some children's rubber boots have snaps.

How to Buy Pointe Shoes

How to Buy Pointe Shoes

En Pointe is the art of dancing on the very tips of your toes while performing steps in ballet. Dancing on pointe is strenuous, difficult and can be dangerous. Dancers are not commonly allowed to begin pointe work until they have mastered at least five years of traditional ballet, and even when beginning pointe work the drills and training must be exercised with great delicacy and diligence. Pointe shoes are a specialized ballet shoe built with a hardtoed block and stiff shank, which help the dancer stand on tiptoe. The irregular position that a pointe shoe forces a dancers foot into, along with the strenuous act of actually dancing in this position, means that the fit of a pointe shoe is of vital importance to the health and longevity of a dancer and her career.

Instructions

    1

Some modern improvements have been made to the shanks and block to increase the life of a pointe shoe, but most of this is done in vain. Because of the way a pointe shoe is used, it is not durable, often lasting only one performance. Professionals may go through more than one pair each night.

    2

Its the size that matters most. Pointe shoes are like bras. If they arent sized correctly they dont do you any good. Capezio, Russian Point, Bloch and Grishko offer a wide selection of sizing options and color combinations.

    3

Pointe shoes can cost anywhere from $30 to $75 and are available in all colors from green to red and yellow to the traditional pink.

    4

Ask the salesperson at a dance shoe store for assistance. You should also discuss the process with your instructor.

    5

Pointe shoes should be snug and fit like a second skin. They should not cause your toes to numb or fall asleep or apply excessive pressure to any part of the foot. One of the leading causes of dance injuries are incorrectly sized pointe shoes.

    6

To find the correct width, try several. All five toes should lay flat against the sole. When you apply weight to the platform or go up onto pointe, your foot should not slide down into the box. If it does slide you need to try a smaller width. Pointe shoes usually run smaller than your regular shoe size and come in soft, medium and hard. To add to the confusion, they come in widths of B, C, D, E and EE.

    7

Everyone has a variation in their foot size. Though in most cases and with most everyday shoes, the difference is barely noticeable, pointe shoes are different. Be sure to fit each foot separately to ensure proper sizing.

    8

You should be able to feel the end of the box with your toes, however when you perform a pli, your toes should not be forced to curl under.

    9

Soften the shoe and box. Place the box (this is the hard block at the toe) between the palms of your hands and gently apply pressure. Do this for each shoe to soften them.

    10

A proper fitting pointe shoe does not allow for growing room, so if you are a young dancer and your foot is still growing, you should be refitted every six months to ensure that you maintain a healthy and proper sizing of your pointe shoes.

Fashion Rules For Open Toed Shoes

Fashion Rules For Open Toed Shoes

There's nothing quite as sexy as a strappy sandal -- providing, of course, that the foot inside is attractive to look at and the shoes are being worn in the appropriate weather and with the appropriate attire. If you are ready to unveil your bare feet and slip into something a little more revealing for the summer, here are a few fashion rules you will want to follow.

Have a Pedicure

Make sure your feet are ready for the extra attention by getting a pedicure

Be sure your toes look their prettiest before slipping into your sexy sandals. Get a pedicure to remove any rough skin and moisturize your heels; and have your toenails painted with a glossy, bright, summer pink, peach or red color. If you have open blisters or visible bunions, do everyone a favor and keep your feet covered until they have healed!

No Pantyhose, Please

It's okay to wear colorful stockings with fun patterns with open-toed shoes

Wear open-toed shoes without stockings or tights, unless the stockings are opaque with a fun pattern. For the most part, it is considered a fashion faux pas to wear pantyhose with open-toed shoes, but recent fashion allows for zany or fun print tights to be worn with "peep-through" shoes. If you do wear tights with your open-toed shoes, be certain they don't have runs, unsightly snags or holes in the toes.

Make Sure Your Legs Look Good

Shave your legs before you wear attention-grabbing, open-toed shoes. Since your feet will be on display, you want to make sure that the attention you receive by sharing your brightly painted toes with the world remains positive when onlookers' eyes naturally wander upward. There's nothing quite as unappealing as hairy legs on an otherwise beautiful woman, and since you have already gone through the effort of a pedicure, there is no excuse for laziness when it comes to shaving your legs.

Be Weather Concious

Dress in open-toed shoes whenever you feel comfortable wearing them. Though it used to be considered unfashionable to wear open-toed shoes in the fall and winter, shows like Sex in the City changed all of that, and now women wear strappy high-heeled sandals even with formal attire despite the season. Use common sense, though, and don't wear sandals in the snow or heavy rain.

Office Etiquette

Check your company's policy on open-toed shoes before wearing them to work

Check your company's dress code before wearing open-toed shoes to the office. Some companies do not allow them, and some have rules about the amount of toe that can be visible or the type of open-toed shoe that is acceptable. Many companies do not allow flip-flops but have no problem with high-heeled sandals or "peep-through" type shoes. If you are uncertain about the fine print in your company manual, ask a coworker or supervisor.
