Shoe polish stains are very noticeable, and can sometimes be quite difficult to remove. There are a few low-cost tricks that will remove shoe polish stains from clothing, carpeting or any other object that comes in contact with shoe polish. Before trying anything else, first attempt to tamp the stain with a dry or damp paper towel or cloth. Many times this will absorb the majority of the stain-causing substance, and require much less work with stain-removing products.
Mechanic's Soap
Mechanic's soap is one of the best ways to remove shoe polish stains. Shoe polish has a greasy texture, similar to greases that are used by mechanics. This soap is an effective, low-cost solution. Rub onto the stained area in a circular motion, and let sit for two to three hours. Wash in the laundry as you normally would if the stain is on clothing, or scrub with a cloth if the stain is on carpet or furniture.
Dish Detergent
Dish detergent is made to fight and break up grease and grime, so this is a perfect solution for removing shoe polish stains. As with the mechanic's soap, rub the dish detergent into the affected area, and let sit for two to three hours. Wash clothing in the laundry, or scrub any stain on carpet or furniture with a rag.
Rubbing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol is perfect for removing grease stains, including shoe polish stains. This is a low-cost solution, and very effective in stain removal. Soak a few paper towels, or old cloth, in 70 percent to 90 percent isopropyl alcohol, and gently rub over the stain. Continue this procedure until the stain begins to break up and disappear.
All-Purpose Stain Removers
All-purpose stain removers such as paint thinner, nail polish remover, and grease stain removers all work well in removing shoe polish stains. Dab any of these removers over the stain, and use brisk movements to break up the stain, until it diminishes and eventually disappears. Sometimes as they dry stains will break into particles that can be brushed or vacuumed away.
After the Stain is Removed
If the stain does not completely disappear with the use of any of the above mentioned products, try to reapply after a few minutes. Use brisk movements to break up the stain, or rub gently over delicate fabrics like silk and satin. Keep in mind that not all stains will be removed, and may require a professional cleaning (take the stained product to your local dry cleaner if this is required).
After a stain has been removed, you can easily pat the stain dry, use a hair dryer to quickly dry the stain, or use a vacuum over the stained area to collect any debris left behind from the cleanup process.
