Rubber boots are not just utilitarian; with a few design tweaks they can become a fashion statement as well. Many trendy rubber boots are decorated with designs and images, but they can be expensive and it can be difficult to find a design that fits your taste. By making your own hip designs on rubber boots you save money and can customize the boots to match your personal style.
Instructions
- 1
Purchase solid color boots. The thinner the rubber is, the easier they will be to move in. Thicker boots are better suited for people who are walking in deep mud or water but are not necessary for the typical jaunt on a rainy day. Most boots come in the color black, but specialty boots can be purchase in nearly any color online.
2Pick out a color of latex spray paint from a home improvement store. Spray paint sticks well to the rubber as long as it contains some bonding and flex agents. Most spray paint contains latex and will stick well without chipping.
3Choose a stencil to apply to the boots. Stencils can be purchased at most craft stores, but there are also books available that contain premade hip stencils. If you have a particular design in mind, design your own stencil using a craft knife and a sheet of card stock.
4Tape the stencil onto the boot so that it fits snugly. Depending on the size of your design, it may help to cut off the extra paper on the stencil so that it fits better. Use blue painting tape if you wish to reuse the stencil or repeat the design, as regular tape could potentially tear the stencil upon removal.
5Cover all exposed parts of the boot with plastic wrap except the area you wish to paint. This protects the rest of the boot from the paint so that your design is the only part being painted.
6Spray the paint over the top of the stencil, avoiding the rest of the boot. Keep the nozzle about 1 foot away from the boot to ensure that the paint is applied evenly.
7Leave the paint to dry for several hours. If you remove the stencil before the paint dries, you run the risk of smearing the design. If you are stenciling on a repeated pattern, however, it will be very time consuming to wait for the paint to dry on each stencil.
