How to Clean Hiking Boots

Hiking boots are a godsend if you have ever gone hiking or walking for extended lengths of time. They can be considered a tool necessary for the sport of hiking. As everyone knows, having the proper tools for the job makes all the difference. Taking care of the tools is essential for continued comfort and wear. A few simple habits will keep your boots in good condition for years of comfortable hiking.

Instructions

Using a brush, remove all loose dirt from the surface of the shows as well as the soles. It is usually a good idea to do this outside as it is messy. Make sure to undo the laces (wash them separately) and get in around the eyelets. Of course, the cleats of the boots can hide the most dirt.

Wipe down the boot using a damp rag, working from the top to the bottom. You may have to rinse the rag out a few times to keep from smearing dirt back onto the leather. Make sure to wring the rag out well before using.

Apply a leather cleaner conditioner product of your choice according to directions. Apply in circular strokes again from the top of the boot to the bottom, excluding the soles. Allow to dry and then buff with a dry cotton or wool rag.

Restring the laces theough the eyelets and store boots in a dry and dark area until ready for use. If the insides are damp, stuff crumpled newspaper into them and remove after a day or so.
