How to Design Your Own Shoe Contest

Holding a contest for 'the best shoe design on the planet' is a great way to recognize folks who dream in shoes and spend their waking hours designing them. Pay close attention to some of the rules and suggestions that govern contests to smooth the way for a well-run promotional program, which can go a long way to help and motivate talented people to get a head start on their path to design fame and fortune.

Identify the reasons you want to hold a 'design your own shoe' contest. Clarify your mission: Is it to bestow recognition on a talented designer, help underwrite a design scholarship or promote your own agenda, website or cause by staging a contest that will send business prospects your way?

Conceive a list of goals and objectives. Earmark a cash prize if that's to be the payoff for the winner. Understand the difference between a contest and a sweepstakes (a contest requires skill while a sweepstakes is all about chance and random selection). Compile rules and regulations to govern the entry and award process.

Solicit shoe businesses---manufacturers, retailers, designers---for prize donations for your 'design your own shoe' contest.
