How to Make Fur Boot Covers

How to Make Fur Boot Covers

Faux fur boot covers make winter gear more cozy, a costume more stylish and a go-go dancer's outfit super sexy. Basic sewing skills, some faux fur and a recycled T-shirt are all you need to whip up a pair of super cute faux fur boot covers. Faux fur comes in so many different colors and styles, you could make pairs to match whatever mood you're in.

Instructions

    1

Put on your boots and measure from the top edge of your boot to the top of your foot for the length of your boot cover. Wrap the measuring tape around the top edge of the boot for the circumference of your boot cover.

    2

Determine how much fabric you need with your measurements. If you are making tall boots that measure, for example 16 inches tall by 17 inches around, you will need yard of faux fur. You'll need less for shorter boots. The length of elastic is the circumference measurement.

    3

Draw two rectangles matching your boot cover measurements onto the wrong, not furry, side of the faux fur and cut out.

    4

Draw two rectangles matching your boot cover measurements onto your T-shirt. Use the bottom hem of the T-shirt as your guide when lining up the rectangles. You will be using the hem as the casing for the elastic at the top of your boot covers, so your finished rectangles will be the same measurement as the fur plus the width of the bottom hem of the T-shirt.

    5

Fold the hem of the T-shirt over to the meet the top of the rectangle, pin in place and sew down. Both ends should still be open. Stitch across the top -inch to stop the elastic from sliding up. Double stitch for durability.

    6

Fold the T-shirt in half the long way, right sides together, pin in place and stitch a seam on the -inch mark. Start stitching just under the casing openings. You need to leave them open to feed the elastic through. Double stitch for durability.

    7

Feed the elastic through the casing. Overlap the ends about 1/2 inch and stitch together.

    8

Fold the faux fur in half the long way, right sides together, pin in place and stitch a seam on the -inch mark. Double stitch for durability. You now have two tubes, one of faux fur and one of T-shirt.

    9

Insert the T-shirt tube inside the faux fur tube. Faux fur has a definite direction, so be sure the fur pile is facing down and the T-shirt tube casing is at the top edge of the fur tube. Pin the bottom edge of the T-shirt lining to the bottom edge of the faux fur and stitch on the -inch seam mark. Double stitch for durability.

    10

Sew the top edge of the T-shirt lining fabric to the top edge of the faux fur tube. You will need to stretch the elastic and match the edges without pinning. Double stitch for durability.

    11

Use the seam ripper to pull any fur that got stuck in the stitches out from under the threads. Don't tug or pluck; you aren't trying to remove the fur, just pull it out from under the thread to hide the stitching.
