The Right Way to Soften a Pair of Leather Boots

The Right Way to Soften a Pair of Leather Boots

Softening a pair of leather boots can make the difference between an enjoyable walk and a painful journey. From hiking gear to cowboy attire, boots come in a variety of leathers. No matter what style of boot you wear, breaking in your boots remains essential to your foot comfort. No overnight remedy for softening boots exists, so stay patient during this process. According to podiatrist Dr. Stuart Plotkin, a thick leather boot may require up to 50 miles of hikes to properly soften.

Instructions

    1

Put on two pairs of thick cotton socks.

    2

Lace up your boots tightly, making sure that the tongue falls comfortably over the center of your foot.

    3

Wear your boots for 20 to 30 minutes around your home.

    4

    Remove your boots and socks.

    5

Check the condition of your feet. Note any spots that became irritated while wearing the boots.

    6

Break in the boots a second time when your feet feel completely recovered from the first attempt. Place moleskin bandages or adhesive bandages on your feet at any points that grew irritated earlier.

    7

Put on two pairs of socks and lace up the boots tightly.

    8

Spend two hours walking around your home in the boots, completing household chores.

    9

Soften the sole of the boots by squatting up and down.

    10

Remove the boot, and take note of any irritation on your foot.

    11

Bend the sole to help soften the leather.

    12

Begin breaking in your leather boots outside the home when your feet feel up to the challenge. Apply moleskin and adhesive bandages to any sensitive areas on your feet, and wear two pairs of cotton socks.

    13

Break in your boots for short periods of time while taking part in normal activities in which you might regularly wear leather boots. Go for short hikes if breaking in hiking boots, or wear dress boots on a quick trip to the store.

    14

Continue to break in your boots for short periods of time until the leather softens to permit longer periods of wear.
