Can You Recycle Ugg Boots?

The expression "reduce, reuse and recycle" has inspired people to find creative new uses for old products. Trendy cold weather boots known as Uggs are the perfect example of products that have found new life. For recyclers, it does not matter whether the worn boots become a part of someone else's wardrobe or are used as furniture pads, as long as the boots do not end up in a landfill.

If the boots still can be worn, you can donate them to a local charity. Often the charity will sell the boots at a thrift store and the proceeds will go to causes like helping provide the homeless with food or shelter. You can also look online for charities that collect shoes to distribute to disaster victims.

If you have a cousin or friend who wears the same shoe size, offer to give them the boots. A new pair of boots can cost upward of $150, but cleaning or repairs cost less than $75. Even if the shoes are in less-than-perfect condition, your friend or relative can visit the Craggs Repairs website to have the Uggs fixed for just half the price of a new pair.

If you have hardwood floors, you know exactly how valuable a set a furniture pads can be. While you can purchase the pads at local stores, a "How Can I Recycle This?" website reader named Evelyn suggests using the sheepskin of the boots to make your own furniture pads. Simply measure the leg of a chair or table, cut a piece of sheepskin to match those dimensions, and affix the cutout to the furniture using a strong adhesive.

A company called Kiwi Sheepskins sells small play rugs for babies that cost more than $200. But if you have tall Uggs, you can cut off the sheepskin into long strips and sew them together to make a small rug. If you do not know a baby who needs a sheepskin rug, it could make an excellent accessory for your bathroom or a cozy bed for your pet.

If making a rug does not interest you, perhaps you could find a place for a sheepskin throw pillow. Your local craft store will likely have a few different types of stuffing available for homemade pillows, and it could be the finishing touch you need for your couch or bed.
