From barleycorns to "Brannock Devices," the methods used to determine shoe size have varied from country to country. Though we share a common language, the United States and the United Kingdom use different standards for measuring shoes.
UK Shoe Sizes
The first standards for shoe measurement in the United Kingdom developed about 150 years ago. At that time, an inch was defined as the length of three barleycorns. The barleycorn measurement (1/3 of an inch) has continued to be the standard of measurement. A man's shoe size begins at size zero (8 2/3 inches) and increases by one barleycorn (1/3 inch) per shoe size. Some shops in the UK use a Brannock device, which measures both the length and the width of feet.
U.S. Shoe Sizes
There are several methods used to determine shoe size in the United States. The first is similar to the UK standard, with a few important differences: Shoe sizes begin at size one, instead of zero; women's shoe sizes are measured the same as men's, but with 1.5 sizes added. Because of this difference, U.S. men's shoe sizes are one size greater, and U.S. women's sizes 2.5 sizes greater, than the equivalent UK size.
The Brannock Device is used in the United States as well as the United Kingdom. A system that uses five-millimeter increments, instead of the standard 1/3 inch, is used by some athletic shoe manufacturers.
Shoe Size Increases by Half
In both the United States and the United Kingdom, shoe size is expressed in halves. For example, if someone wears a size 9, the next size is a 9 1/2.
Using a Size Chart
There are several UK and U.S. shoe-size conversion charts available online. Pay attention to the charts and tips offered on retailers' websites: Shop owners who are familiar with UK/U.S. size-conversion issues can help you get the right fit.
Size Charts Aren't Perfect
Don't rely on size-conversion charts to get the best fit; the shoe's style, shape and brand impacts how it feels on your foot. It is always best to actually try on a shoe before purchasing it. If you are working with an online merchant, ask about her exchange policy. If you can find a local retailer of a brand, try on the shoe for size in the store and then order online.
Dealing With Online Shoe Sellers
