Can I Dye a Satin Shoe at Home?

Satin shoes for dance or formal wear are available in a number of different styles. While many shoe stores will dye your satin shoes, you may want to dye your own. Fortunately, dyeing satin shoes at home is not difficult. You can mix your dye colors to achieve the perfect shade to match your dress or costume and even redye shoes to a darker color after an event. Learning to dye satin shoes at home can save you money, make a single pair of slippers or pumps more versatile, and allow you to have just the color you want.

Supplies

Dylon dyes are the best choice for dyeing satin shoes at home. Dylon produces both a liquid dye specifically for satin shoes and a multipurpose powdered dye; however, both versions can be used to dye satin slippers, sandals or pumps. Multipurpose Dylon dyes will work quite well for dyeing synthetics, including satin. Multipurpose dyes can also be used for a wide variety of fabrics and may even be useful for costumes. If you are using the satin shoe dye, you will not need additional supplies. The multipurpose dye requires a pot dedicated to craft and dye use, a spoon reserved for dye use, a sponge, gloves and water, as well as a pinch of salt. A scrap of satin is also useful for testing the color.

Choosing a Color

When ordering or purchasing Dylon dyes for your satin shoes, you may wish to buy several shades of multipurpose dye to create a perfect color match. If you need to dye your shoes red, consider buying two different reds in the multipurpose dye that look close to the perfect red you want to achieve. Twenty six colors are available in the standard powdered dye, but somewhat fewer colors are available in the satin shoe dye. The specialized satin shoe dye cannot be mixed easily as it is in liquid form. If you dye frequently, you may simply want to purchase primary colors and mix as needed to achieve a variety of colors.

Dyeing Your Satin Shoes with Multipurpose Dye

Pour 1/2 liter to 1 liter of water into your pot. Bring the water to a simmer. Wearing gloves, add a pinch of dye and a pinch of salt. Mix well. Adding more dye pinch by pinch until the desired color is achieved. Use a small scrap of satin to test the color. You can simply drip dye onto the satin or use an eyedropper for slightly more precision. Be sure to have your dress or costume available for color comparison. Once the desired color is achieved, use a sponge or brush to apply dye to the shoe starting at the back seam. Softer shoes should be packed with tissue paper. Repeat with additional coats of dye as needed to achieve a deeper color. Allow to dry for 24 hours.
