How to Make Your Own Ankle Tie

How to Make Your Own Ankle Tie

Ankle ties are part of a type of shoe that has long laces that wind around the ankles of the wearer. Certain shoes such as espadrilles, always come with ankle ties, and other shoes, such as certain styles of pumps and sandals sometimes have these laces. Ankle ties give you added security in your shoes and a certain romantic quality, as these ankle ties are evocative of the ribbons that wind around the ankles of ballet dancers. You can add ankle ties to any shoes if you want added support.

Instructions

    1

Cut two small rectangles of canvas that match the color of the majority of your shoe. The rectangles should be 1/2 inch wide and 1 inch long.

    2

Fold each rectangle in half and pin each to the back heel of your shoe, or the back heel strap of your shoe. The creases of the rectangles should be pointing upwards, extending at least 1/2 inch up from the back of the shoe.

    3

Thread a upholstery needle with clear plastic thread and sew each folded canvas rectangle in place with a row of tiny, tight stitches.

    4

Knot off your pieces of thread to secure and cut away the excess. Trim away excess fabric from the canvas that extends below the row of stitches.

    5

Add a few drops of clear upholstery glue to the row of stitches to help secure them. Cut two pieces of 24-inch cotton cord or ribbon in a color that matches your shoes. Thread them through the loop each folded canvas rectangle has created. Your ankle ties are now ready to wear.
