Leather, the skin of mammals, reptiles or large birds, is a pliable, durable material that serves a wide range of applications from heavy-duty upholstery to butter-soft pants. Leather can also be treated in a variety of ways to achieve various finishes. On opposite ends of the spectrum of leather looks are patent leather and nubuck.
Leather in general
To make leather, workers separate the hair and fat from the hide of an animal, preserve and tan the leather using various chemicals and apply other chemicals to create a variety of finishes, from soft and fuzzy to strong and flexible to hard and shiny.
Patent Leather
Patent leather was developed in Europe in the 1700s and was commercially available starting in 1822. The process to create patent leather involves adding a strong lacquer as a final finishing step. Patent leather is hard, shiny and waterproof, but vulnerable to scratches and scuffs.
Nubuck Leather
Nubuck leather involves using the soft inner side of the hide, and brushing it to a soft, slightly nappy finish, smoother than suede. Nubuck leather is strong, but because it is not treated with a final finishing chemical, it is prone to soiling and staining, and requires special products to keep it clean and maintain the brushed finish.
