Making Ballet Shoes ~ Women Shoes Advisory

Making ballet shoes, whether it be for your little girl's dress-up sessions or for practical wear as a fashion piece, can be a fun and inexpensive project to undertake. Before you begin constructing your shoes, you'll need to gather your materials, which include paper, pencil, measuring tape, canvas and deerskin or leather.

Have your child stand on a piece of paper. With a pencil, trace the outline of her foot (on both feet). Take another sheet of paper and lay it over the outline of her foot, tracing it so it looks like the sole of a shoe (with a round toe). Cut out the paper soles and set them aside.

Take a piece of canvas (preferably the edge) and wrap it around her foot so that the opening is in the back (where you will sew it together). Wrap it around her foot and place the paper sole under it, marking with pencil and then cutting where the canvas will meet the sole. Once you have cut out the top of the shoe, sew the back seam together so that your shoe now takes the shape of a ballet shoe without the sole.

Cut out your leather from the paper sole pattern, then sew the sole to the canvas with a very strong needle.

Fold the top of the shoe back about an eighth of an inch and sew so there won't be any hanging edges.

Add embellishments like bows, rhinestones or ribbons on either side of the arch so that the wearer can tie them around her ankles like a real ballerina.
