Women love wearing them, and men love watching women sashay across the floor in a pair of high heel shoes. The problem is that heels are sensitive creations. They get scuffed, scratched, caught in carpet fibers, even fall off. Use the tips below to keep your shoes well-heeled.

Resist the temptation to simply nail a broken heel back into place. In no time the nail will slide and you'll be back to square one. Here's the solution: Get shoe glue from a repair shop. Be sure to read all instructions that come with the glue and use it properly. Cover the heel and exposed nails with the glue. Align the heel with the shoe sole and press the heel back into place. Wipe off the excess glue with a lint-free towel. Use a small tack hammer and tap on the nails from the interior of the shoe. Allow the glue to dry for the length of time indicated with the shoe glue directions.

Keep those ultra high stiletto heels ready to wear, even when the tips wear down. Purchase replacement tips from your shoe repair shop and keep them on hand. They're small and usually made of hard rubber. Take your tack hammer and tap the tips onto the heel nails. Problem solved.

Remove light scuff marks with your hand.

Driving and rubbing heels against chair legs can often leave unsightly scuff marks. Here's a tip that won't cost a dime. Take your hand and rub them over light scuffs. Your natural body oils will remove the markings. Give hardier scuffs the brushoff by using a neutral polish and a soft shoe brush.

Don't let water get the best of heels on your blue (or any color) suede shoes. Let shoes dry completely, then take a soft brush or sponge and swipe across the heel, going in one direction only. Do not rub or go back and forth. This process will restore the nap of the suede.

Keep a repair kit to keep your heels in high shape.

Here's what you need: shoe glue, shoe heel tips, small tack hammer, shoe nails, a soft brush and a lint-free cloth. Most items are inexpensive enough that you can create a kit for home, work, even one to stash in your car.

High heels are viewed as a fashion must, a complement to any outfit, and a vital fashion accessory. Shoes are no longer a practical item, but a wardrobe essential, and women will pay extremely high prices to have the best, most stylish shoes around. But how did we get here? Were high heels always a part of society or are they simply a fashion that will eventually die? The truth is, high heels have been around since ancient times, and it is doubtful they will ever go out of style.

In ancient Egypt, most of the lower class walked barefoot. However, according to murals that date back to 3500 B.C., upper-class men and women wore an early version of high heels, most likely for ceremonies and events. Greeks and Romans also wore a type of platform heels; actors used the increase height to symbolize a higher social status or importance. Ancient Roman prostitutes also wore heels to identify themselves.

In the Middle Ages, men and women were known to wear pattens, a lifted shoe attachment that protected expensive shoes from street muck. In Turkey in the 1400s, chopines were invented, another overshoe that resembled an early platform shoe; they were worn exclusively by women. Women were known to wear chopines that were anywhere from 7 to 30 inches tall, and the wearers sometimes required a cane or the assistance of a servant to walk around. The Venetians turned chopines into a status symbol, with a higher heel meaning the woman held more wealth and power than someone with a lower heel.

In the 1500s, two-piece shoes were being made, and high heels began to take on a more fashionable quality. Because manufacturers had difficulty making right and left heels that mirrored each other, they began to make shoes that could fit either foot. The distinction between right and left shoes didn't return until the 1800s.

Catherine de Medici is credited with making high heels an item of fashion. In 1533, she was engaged to the Duke of Orleans at the age of 14. Because she was under 5 feet tall, and somewhat plain looking, she began to wear 2-inch high heels to make herself stand out against the duke's favorite mistress and seem more powerful in her rule as the queen of French court.

The trend caught on quickly, and heels became associated with privilege. By 1580, heels were worn as fashion pieces by both men and women. In the early 1700s, the king of France, Louis XIV, wore elaborate heels that had drawings of battle scenes on the heels. They were referred to as "Louis heels" and could be 5 inches tall. High-heel laws soon followed, with the king only allowing nobility to wear red heels, and making it illegal for anyone's heels to be taller than his.

After the French Revolution, Napoleon banished the Louis heel in a push for equality. However, when Marie Antoinette was taken to the guillotine, she wore 2-inch high heels. In the 1790s, heels lowered in height to 2 inches, and eventually an even shorter wedge heel, which was called the spring. It was around this time that right and left shoes returned. From this time in history until the 1930s, there were four types of heels worn: the spring, the stacked, the knock-on and the Louis.

It was in the 1920s that high heels became a fashion focus again. The high hemlines and bold fashions of the "roaring 20s" called for equally bold foot fashions. However, the Great Depression brought about more practical, low and wide shoe fashions, and during World War II shoes turned higher with thick heels while materials were rationed.

It was Christian Dior's collaboration with shoe designer Roger Vivier in the 1950s that led to today's pointy-toed stiletto heel. This style dominated the 1960s, when the stiletto heel became popular on tall boots and were often paired with mini skirts. The 1970s gave way to the platform shoe, which again was worn by both men and women. High heels returned in the 1980s and '90s, when designers like Manolo Blahnik brought high-heeled, trendy shoes to the catwalk, to Hollywood and eventually, to the everyday woman.

How to Size Dansko Dress Shoes

Dansko dress shoes are some of the most comfortable, versatile and fashionable available. But they can be a little tricky when it comes to getting the right size. Since all Dansko shoes, even the dressier styles, are based on the makeup of the basic clog, they tend to be a tad clunky and roomy, which is exactly how they are supposed to fit.

Instructions

Translate your American shoe size. Dansko are available in the European sizes rather than standard American shoe sizes. Do a quick translation by simply adding 30 to your own shoe size. For instance, if you wear a women's size 8, start with a size 38.

Fine tune the translation. If you wear a half size, such as 8.5, go to the next size up, which would be 39.

Consider the width. Dansko are usually medium width, but some of the clunky styles may feel wider, making a smaller size more comfortable.

Consider the stockings. Decide what type of stockings you will be wearing most often with the shoe. Thick, wool tights may dictate a larger size than bare feet.

Test them. Try on the shoe at least twice before wearing it full time. Wear it around carpet once in the morning, when your feet are at their smallest, and again in the evening, when your feet are most swollen from a day of being on them. Wear the stockings you would normally wear with the shoes.

How to Make Your Own Pair of Shoes

Not interested in purchasing a pair of pre-designed shoes from you local mall? Many shoe companies allow you to design your own footwear online. You can choose from an array of colors, pre-set designs and text options to complete your personal design. From skate shoes to simple sneakers, such as Keds, you can choose a type of footwear and easily create a personalized version to reflect your individuality.

Instructions

Create an online Keds account. After you create an account, click the "Design Your Own" tab.

Choose your gender and age by clicking on the "Women," "Men" or "Kids" tab. After you choose your gender, select a shoe style with your mouse---Lace Up, Slip On or Mini Slip On. Next, select a shoe size.

Select the shoe you want to start designing by selecting one of the options on the "Select a Part" pane (for example, outside quarter, inside quarter, tongue, laces, etc.).

Select a color, pattern or image from the toolbar. You can also upload personal digital images from your computer and apply them to your shoe design. Click the "Image" tab, click the "Upload" button, locate your preferred image, and click "OK." When you're finished designing your shoe, click the "Apply" button.

Click the "Buy" button when you're completely satisfied with your shoe design. Next, click the "Proceed to Checkout" button.

Review your billing and shipping information. Enter your credit card information and complete your order.

Go to the official Etnies website and click the "Custom Shoes" link at the bottom of the page.

Choose your preferred shoe style and gender by clicking on one of the listed shoe icons (for example, Mens Fader, Girls RSS, Kids Fader, etc.).

Decide on the shoe area you want to start designing and check the box next to the specific area (side panel, toe cap, laces, eyelets, etc.). Once you click an option, a color toolbar will appear. Select the color or pattern you want to apply to that specific area. Each time you experiment with different colors and patterns, a preview of your shoe will appear on the left side of the website screen.

Continue adding color or pattern to each section of the shoe.

Click on the "Name Your Shoes" tab when you're finished designing your shoe. Next, select your shoe size from the "Size" drop-down menu, as well as the quantity of shoes you want to order.

Click on the "Buy Your Shoes" tab. Next, click "Add to Cart" and review your shipping information.

Choose your method of payment---Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express or PayPal. Enter your credit card and billing information.

Click the "Review Order" button and confirm your purchase. Your order will be shipped within six to eight weeks.

Create a free Vans account, select the "Shop" link on the main website page, and click on the "Custom Shoes" link.

Select one of the three available shoe models---Era, Slip-On or Old Skool.

Select your gender by clicking on the "Men," "Women" or "Boys" option. Next, select your preferred shoe size. When you're finished selecting your gender and shoe size, click the "Next" button.

Select the color foundation for your shoe by clicking the "White" or "Black" option.

Choose the section of the shoe you want to begin designing (quarter, heel, toe, laces, tongue, etc.) by clicking on the designated link for that specific area. Add a color or pattern to the specific shoe area by clicking on one of the available colors. Experiment with different colors and patterns by clicking on each of the options in the color and design pane. Each time you click on one of the colors or pre-made patterns, a preview of your design will appear on the right-hand side of the website screen. Continue designing your shoe by adding colors and patterns to each shoe section.

Click the "Add to Cart" button when you're satisfied with your design.

Enter your billing and shipping information, including your name, address and phone number. Click the "Next" button.

Review your order and enter your credit card information. When you're finished entering your personal information, click the "Complete Order" button. Your new shoes will be created and sent within five to seven weeks.

What Color Shoes to Wear With a Purple Dress

If you have found the perfect purple dress you are now going to want to find the perfect shoes to go with the dress. This is simple enough as long as you follow a few key color and fashion rules. Follow the rules and you will quickly find the perfect complement to your dress.

The style of your dress is important in choosing the perfect shoes to go with it. There are big differences among a formal gown, a short dress, a Gothic-looking denim dress and a flirty tennis dress.

The other consideration is going to be any secondary colors in the dress. You can play up a secondary color in the shoes.

Of course, the most predictable color choice is going to be purple. To pull this off you will need to have the shoes professionally dyed to match. This is a good choice for all dress styles. It may be a little stiff for casual dresses, but it's doable.

You can, if your dress is casual, use an entirely different shade of purple for the shoes. The shoes need to be casual and the color difference has to be obvious; it has to look intentional.

Black goes with just about everything. In the case of a purple dress, however, you need to be careful. Black is too harsh for most purple dresses. The best bets are to save this for casual dresses where you are intentionally going for something akin to a Gothic look. In this case you are going to be looking more at boots than shoes, though Mary Janes are acceptable here.

Black is generally more appropriate for winter than summer, but there are no longer any hard rules on the matter.

Silver is a good choice for formal and semiformal purple dresses. It's going to be important to spread the silver around by wearing silver jewelry as well. That will tie the look together.

White will work with many casual purple dresses. Specifically, you are going to want to go with light canvas tennis shoes. If you can find purple laces that match the dress that would be a great color touch.

You can opt for white sandals but only if the dress is a light purple. If it's dark or royal purple, you need to make another choice because the contrast will be too great.

White is usually considered more appropriate in summer than during any other season, but that guideline is no longer considered a rule.

Pink is a possibility, but only for those with a casual-style dress who are accessorizing a great deal with pink. A matching pink belt would help here as well. This is really a look that is going to be difficult for those over 40 to get away with wearing. There is one exception to this: a light-pink sandal paired with a light-purple, almost lilac, dress.
