How to Clean Pink Suede Shoes

If your favorite pink suede shoes are in need of a quick cleaning, there is no need to panic. Because suede is a delicate fabric, you will need expert tips to clean the fabric gently without damaging the leather or destroying the beautiful pink hue. With a few common household items and two products made specifically for suede, you can restore the rosy color back to your shoes in less than 20 minutes.

Instructions

Brush the shoe to reveal dirt. To loosen dirt trapped in the nap, use an old toothbrush or old towel to bring the dirt to the surface of the shoe. If your shoes are covered in dust or sand, use the small attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove the dirt gently.

Apply a suede brush to remove any dust or grime. Using short strokes, brush the soiled area. The suede brush removes small pieces of the leather to reveal the smooth under layer of the skin without diminishing the pink color of the shoe.

Remove scuffs with an emery board or pencil eraser. Use these tools to erase small black marks. Rub gently to prevent fabric damage.

Blot dry. If you get moisture on your suede shoes, quickly blot them dry with a clean cloth. Take suede shoes drenched by the rain or snow to a professional for expert cleaning and repair.

Sponge vinegar to remove stubborn dirt or stains. Apply a mixture of 1 tsp. of vinegar and 1 tsp. of water to an old rag or T-shirt. Press into the soiled area gently. Let the vinegar dry for 10 minutes. Apply the suede brush to the area, to lift the vinegar solution and the stain. Dilute the vinegar to prevent the pink suede from darkening.

Spray shoes with a silicone shoe protectant. After every third wearing of your pink shoes, apply a suede fabric protector to resist new stains. Spray the solution lightly--for four or five seconds--to protect the suede during wearings.

How to Add a Zipper to Boots

Boots are a hot ticket item to have in your shoe collection because of their versatility, durability and practicality. There are many different styles and versions of boots; sometimes you may need to add a zipper to the boot to make it a bit larger, or to add that extra accent to your unique fashion statement. Adding a zipper is not all that hard, but it may take a little bit of time and patience.

Instructions

Make a cut with the scissors where you want the zipper to be.

Insert the zipper sides into the two pieces of fabric. If there is only one layer, put the zipper inside the shoe, both sides lined up with the edge of the fabric.

Secure the zipper with pins.

Use the sewing machine with the zipper foot to stitch one side of the zipper into place. Choose a thread that matches the outside of your boots to sew on the zipper.

Sew around both ends of the zipper to really secure it to the boot.

Snip and tie off the thread.

Repeat on the opposite side.

Remove the pins.

What Makes a Comfortable Shoe?

From the time we start wearing shoes, it's important that we have footwear that supports the foot's healthy development. Good shoes absorb shock as we walk and pad our weight against the hard ground. Quality shoes with good support also keep our arches from collapsing, preserving our posture and body alignment. However, much of what creates a supportive shoe might not always produce an attractive shoe; therefore, there's often a clash between the call of fashion and the call of health.

According to foot care company Foot Solutions: "Our feet and ankles contain 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 muscles." To help this complex system, a good shoe must support our gait with well-crafted parts. The foot should hit all stages of a step on a straight path while lending strength to the ankle to minimize extra movement. Parts that help with this include a slightly raised heel between 1 and 2 inches, a strongly built arch, a structure with built-up sides and padding at the ball joints near the front of the foot. It is also important that the shoe be crafted of natural, breathable materials that aid ventilation to prevent athlete's foot and foul odor.

With a list like this, many people might instantly think of boots or sneakers. However, many fashion shoe designers are now in the healthy shoe business. There are also many companies and doctor's offices that make custom orthotics, or shoe inserts, to fix trouble zones. Don't be fooled into thinking that all kitten heels and flats are healthy, however. If they don't offer support, along with a strong structure, they're no good for hard wear.

Many women love their Manolos and Sigerson Morrisons, but they're terrible for long-term wear. High heels are generally a bad idea, and not just for your pocketbook. The structure of a high heel places the entire weight of the body on the front of the foot, rather than distributing it evenly along the whole sole. Caroline Gammell of UK's Telegraph says, "Such restrictive footwear can also cause bunions, ingrown toenails, nerve problems, stress fractures and 'hammertoes'--a permanent bend in the middle joint of a toe." Long-time wearers may even be stuck wearing high heels forever, since the Achilles's tendon becomes permanently short and stiff; because of this, they can no longer wear flats.

How to Measure Fashion Boots on Your Leg

Fashion boots often come with standard, wide or narrow calf sizes, accommodating a wide range of leg sizes. Measure your calf so that you are certain that the boots you order will properly fit your legs. There is nothing worse than boots that will not zip because they are too tight, or boots that slouch down because they are way too big. Properly sized boots will stay up without feeling tight or falling down.

Instructions

Look at your calf in order to determine where the widest part is. If you have trouble, use a mirror to determine which area looks widest.

Measure around the widest part of your calf using a sewing tape measure, ensuring that your foot is flat on the ground. Make sure the tape measure is lying flat and that it is straight all the way around your calf. Do not pull the tape measure too tightly, or your boots may feel snug on you.

Write down your calf measurement and then determine which calf size is appropriate for your leg. Most online manufacturers list the circumference of the calf on their boots. If you are ordering custom boots, simply give your calf measurement to the boot maker and they will ensure that the boot meets your specifications. In a shoe store, bring your tape measure to measure the inside of a boot before you try it on.
