Boot Lacing Techniques

You can lace your boots in a decorative fashion, or in a way designed to improve their function. You can lace them to provide more flexibility or to provide more support. You can also change the lacing to provide a more secure knot that will keep your boot from twisting and turning.

Lacing for Combat Boots

Combat boots are thick and inflexible. You can lace them in the "combat" or "Army" style to get a little more "give" on the sides and around the ankle. To lace your boots in this fashion, thread the shoelace evenly up through the bottom eyelets. Run the left lace up the left side to the next eyelet, and insert the lace down into the eyelet. Run the right lace up the right side to the next eyelet, and insert the lace down into the eyelet. Cross the laces over the tongue of the boot, and bring them up in the third eyelet on opposite sides. Again, run each lace up the side it is now on, then go down into the next eyelet. Cross the laces again over the tongue, and come up in the next eyelet on the opposite side. Continue lacing in this fashion until you have reached the top of the eyelets. This lacing technique uses less of the lace and produces longer ends.

Lacing for Hiking Boots

A special ladder lacing technique is good for hiking boots, or other boots that need to fit snugly to support the ankle. This is also a very distinctive and decorative technique that is especially attractive when the lace and boot colors contrast. This lacing technique uses more lace and produces shorter ends; you might want to begin with a longer than usual shoelace. To lace your boots in this fashion, thread the shoelace evenly up through the bottom eyelets. Run the left lace up the left side to the next eyelet, and insert the lace down into the eyelet. Run the right lace up the right side of the boot to the next eyelet, and insert the lace down into the eyelet. Carry the left lace across the tongue of the boot, then come up and pass under the vertical bar created by the right lace; travel up the right side of the boot and go down in the next eyelet. Carry the right lace across the tongue of the boot, across the left lace, then come up and pass under the vertical bar created by the left lace; travel up the left side of the boot and go down in the next eyelet. Repeat crossing the laces and running them across the tongue and then up under the vertical bar on the opposite side, alternating with which side is on top. Continue until you reach the top of the eyelets.

Preventing Ankle Twisting

If you plan to be hiking, you will need your boots laced and tied securely. In addition to using the lacing methods listed above, you can change the way you place the laces in the last eyelets to make a more secure knot. After the laces come up the side of the shoe vertically and go down into the eyelet, bring them across to the other side of the shoe and up under the other vertical bar. Tying your boots in this fashion takes advantage of the snug lacing you have created and will help keep your boot from twisting as you climb.
