People may not get rich and famous being shoe salesmen, but they can make a decent living and join other famous folks who also sold shoes at one time or another in their lives. To make it in the shoe sales industry, plenty of specific skills must be at the ready, as is a willingness to do what some may consider some pretty dirty work.
Function
The sole purpose of a shoe salesman is not just to sell a shoe. Sure, that's one of the main goals, but his job is also to make the customer walk away with a fine experience. He needs to be at the beck and call of the customer, even if she insists on trying on nine different styles in sizes that are way too small for her feet. An effective salesman will still be able to get a sale out of that scenario, by gently urging the person to try on a different size or style that better fits her lifestyle or foot width. The most skilled shoe salesmen should be able to size up a foot at a glance and know which styles and sizes will comfortably fit it. A shoe salesman also needs to be able to counsel the customer in the latest shoe trends, answering fashion questions. He needs to be well-versed in the hottest new shoe styles so he can steer customers in the appropriate direction.
Features
Shoe salesmen positions are not for everyone. The person has to be limber enough to bend down to help customers try on the shoes, agile enough to reach shoe boxes in high places and often strong enough to help move stock in the back room. She must also have patience, understanding, a soft touch and the ability to make people feel comfortable. Touching someone's feet, or even getting near them, is often an intimate encounter. Shoe salesmen need to have a professional demeanor but not one that puts a customer off or makes her feel demeaned. She must also have a strong poker face in case she encounters less than appealing conditions when a person takes off her shoes.
Types
Shoe salesman jobs vary greatly. Department stores may offer a variety of shoes for a variety of different people, but most will end up specializing in a certain department. Shoe salesman jobs are also available at stores aimed at a target audience, such as children's shoes, women's shoes, men's shoes, athletic shoes or even discount shoe shops. Fancier shoe stores require more attention to the customer, definitely getting a shoe salesman down on bended knee. Discount or warehouse type shoe stores may require less contact with the customer, or at least his feet, but require more work stocking shelves, performing maintenance and cleaning up the disarray left behind.
Significance
Shoe salesmen may not be movie stars per se, but some notable folks have plied this trade. One of the most well-known was shoe salesman Al Bundy, co-star of TV's "Married with Children." Another notable shoe salesman was Frank James, brother of the notorious outlaw Jesse James. Once Frank turned away from the life of crime, he ended up selling shoes in Sanger Brothers department store in Dallas. The store would be jammed, not necessarily with folks buying shoes, but with those simply wanting to ogle the former outlaw. One more notorious man who sold shoes before his infamy was serial killer John Wayne Gacy. The convicted murderer sold shoes at Nunn Bush shoe company.

Although shoe salesman may not seem like a glamorous job, it does have its benefits. Because of the fairly safe work environment, life insurance rates and on the job hazards are considerably low. If you have the knack, good money can also be made as shoes are not a commodity that ever go out of style. Innovative salesmen can also make a huge killing in the shoe industry, especially in the women's market, where shoes are a fashion statement as well as a necessity, and the athletic shoe department, which is a growing niche as people become more health conscious.
