How to Design Your Own Shirt With Your Art

How to Design Your Own Shirt With Your Art

People who profess to have no drawing talent must turn to others to articulate their visions, and because no person is capable of translating another's idea into a perfect replica, even the most expensive design can disappoint. Fortunately, you don't have to turn to others to render your ideas. You're comfortable using a drawing program and you understand enough about design principles to transfer your thoughts into original art. Now, you've decided to take it to the next level and put your idea on a t-shirt so the rest of the world can see just how talented you are.

Instructions

Create Original Art

    1

Sketch out the shape of the art that's to appear on your shirt using your preferred software and drawing tool (paint brush, pen, line, marker) to create the outline of your original composition. Adjust the lines and curves accordingly to rough out your design, making adjustments until your illustration is complete.

    2

Access your color picker to choose a palette for your shirt artwork, but stick with the RGB (red, green, blue) color mode for the most consistent color representations on your monitor. According to Gomediazine.com, take a tip from professional illustrators: always select true black, not the hue produced in the CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) mode, for your outlines and details.

    3

Use the eyedropper or bucket tool to fill in color on your shirt art. Group the native art when you're satisfied with the finished illustration, or keep working with tools, colors and filters to alter your composition. Alternately, apply special effects before you group the design. Save the file to your desktop with an identifying tag.

Design the Shirt

    4

Measure your shirt. Open a second document in your drawing program and create an outline of the style of shirt you've picked. Downsize proportions so you can work in a smaller environment (i.e., if your shoulder-to-shoulder measurement is 20 inches and your length measurement is 30 inches, cut both figures in half and work in a 10-inch x 15-inch space). Save the outline as a template.

    5

Open a document in your page layout program. Import the template of the t-shirt outline into the page layout document followed by your original art. If you measured correctly, the original image should fit beautifully into the shirt template.

    6

Add text. Play with font styles and sizes until the completed design replicates the design you had in mind at the start of the project. Output a copy of the finished shirt art. Upload your art to the website of an area silkscreen shop. Alternately, burn a disk with the file and take it to the shop for fabrication. Advise personnel that your art is rendered at one-half the size it must be to properly fit on the body of the shirt.
