Based in Florence, Italy, Salvatore Ferragamo started out designing footwear for the wealthy and elite. Although it began as a shoe company, the Ferragamo corporation now carries a full line of footwear, including shoes, sandals and an extensive line of boots. The company also offers clothing, perfumes and branded eyeglasses. Ferragamo has 450 retail stores, half of which are company owned. Salvatore's widow, Wanda Ferragamo, and their children run the company. The eldest son, Ferruccio, is CEO.
Known for High Quality
In the early 1900s Salvatore Ferragamo went from being an apprentice shoemaker to opening his own shop in Italy. He moved to the United States in 1912 and to California in 1920, where he set up a shop in Santa Barbara. Salvatore had a passion for shoes and was able to take scientific knowledge and apply it to shoe and boot making, which led him to be known for attending to all aspects of his footwear.
"Shoemaker to the Stars"
Ferragamo designed and made boots and shoes for the film industry in the early 1920s. Actors and actresses were so pleased with his product, they asked him to design footwear for their off-screen lives. Some of his customers included Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson and Mary Pickford.
In Demand
The popularity of Ferragamo shoes and boots rapidly grew after the public learned about the footwear he constructed for actors. He eventually broadened his offerings to others who could afford his prices. Demand grew so fast during the 1920s, he was forced to expand into a mass production-style business in North America. He couldn't find shoemakers in the United States who could meet his high expectations, so he returned to Italy, where he didn't have any trouble finding qualified leather workers.
Hard Hit by the Depression
After the Wall Street crash in 1929, North American orders for Ferragamo footwear came to a halt. Since his European sales weren't strong enough, Ferragamo was forced into bankruptcy.
Return to Glory
Ferragamo rebuilt his business based on the high quality he was known for and put all his attention on the Italian market. As the supply of leather and metal dwindled in the late 1930s, Ferragamo experimented with other materials. This created an evolution of his footwear---including the use of cork for his wedge heel---and his popularity once again skyrocketed in Italy.
