Cowgirl boots are the feminine version of cowboy boots, which are a type of riding boot traditionally worn by cowboys in the American West. Like cowboy boots, cowgirl boots are characterized by a semi-high heel, rounded or pointed toe and no laces. Around 1870, traditional cowboy boots were created to protect cowboys' feet from potential injury or mishap while riding horses on rough Western terrain. Like cowboy boots, cowgirl boots are usually made out of cow leather, but can also be made out of alligator, snake or buffalo. Cowgirl boots are feminized through detailing like star or flower stencil designs, rhinestone embellishments, tassels and brightly colored leather.

Use measuring tape to measure the length and width of your foot. Use a cutter to divide the leather into three parts: the vamp, counter and uppers. The vamp is the top of the cowgirl boot; the counter covers the heel and bottom; and the uppers go underneath the shins and around the calf area.
2Use a stencil and a small inscribing knife to inscribe a design into the leather uppers. For cowgirl boots, stencils such as horses, stars or flowers can be used. Other materials, such as sequins, can also be applied as desired.
3Glue a shoe lining to the inside of the leather to reinforce the boot.
4Use an industrial sewing machine to sew the edge of the vamp to the edge of the front part of the upper. Sew the edge of the vamp and the upper to the edge of the counter.
5Tack the boot insoles with a small hammer onto a last, which is a wooden foot model. Tack on the sewn vamp and counter.
6Sew the welt, which is the material on the inside part of the bottom of the shoe where the foot will rest, onto the vamp and insole.
7Remove the tacks from the last, and remove the leather boot from the wooden last. Place the boot onto a metal shank that is on a flat surface. Glue the shoe sole in place on the bottom of the boot. Take the boot off the shank and stitch the sole with an industrial machine to reinforce it.
8Put the shoe back on the shank. Use a hammer to nail the heel to the sole of the boot. Hammer small nails 1 inch apart around the edge of the heel.
9Use a sander to sand the heels into a desired shape.
